System analysis on long-term change of deep hydrochemical condition at Horonobe area, Japan

Iwatsuki, Teruki; Ishii, Eiichi

no journal, ,

It is required to demonstrate the long-term variation of hydrochemical condition for the geological isolation of high level radioactive waste. This study illustrates the relationship among the past geological processes and hydrochemical condition, and estimate the long-tern variation of groundwater chemistry at deep part of Horonobe area, Japan.

Measurement of redox potential in deep groundwater by various type of electrode

Morikawa, Keita*; Iwatsuki, Teruki; Hosoya, Shinichi*

no journal, ,

Measurement of redox potential in deep groundwater was conducted at ground surface and in-situ monitoring part of borehole to refine the properties of ORP electrode. The results show that the time to reach the stable value of redox potential depends on shape of Pt electrode.

Oral presentation

Niizato, Tadafumi; Igarashi, Yaeko*; Yasue, Kenichi

no journal, ,

Based on a geomorphological and geological investigation, we can clarify the surface environments during late Last Glacial period in the Horonobe area, northern Hokkado.

Collaborative project of JAEA/AIST on hydrochemical study at MIU construction site, 1; Colloid study

Mizuno, Takashi; Suzuki, Yohei*; Fukuda, Akari*; Hagiwara, Hiroki; Ito, Kazumasa*

no journal, ,

JAEA and AIST has been conducting collaborative work on hydrochemical study at MIU construction site. The aim of this collaborative study is to establish the methodology for investigation, analysis and evaluation of colloid/organics/microbes study. This paper reports that the colloid study. As the result, it is suggested that some metal components are existing as non-dissolved solid.

Helium isotope variations along the Niigata-Kobe Tectonic Zone

Ninomiya, Atsushi; Umeda, Koji

no journal, ,

We compiled existing helium isotope data to inspect an implication of geographic distribution of $$^{3}$$He/$$^{4}$$He ratios derived from hot spring gases to the geophysical structure of the Niigata-Kobe Tectonic Zone (NKTZ) which is a high-strain-rate zone extending from Niigata to Kobe. The result reinforces the clear relationship between helium isotope variations on the surface and the seismicity and resistivity structure of the crust and upper mantle along the NKTZ. In addition, the helium isotopes in hot spring gases may be recognized as a useful geochemical indicator of the presence of concealed active faults with compressional tectonics.

Oral presentation

Hydrochemical study at Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU); Consideration of variation of groundwater chemistry related to the shafts construction

Hagiwara, Hiroki; Mizuno, Takashi

no journal, ,

This report describes the results of investigations on geochemical characteristic of groundwater in the 07MI07 borehole. In this investigation, it was cleared that chemical components of groundwater, such as sodium, chlorine show the feature that the concentration decreases with far from shaft. It was affected by shaft drilling.

Collaborative project of JAEA/AIST on hydrochemical study at MIU construction site, 2; Biogeochemical study

Fukuda, Akari*; Hagiwara, Hiroki; Ishimura, Toyoho*; Kozuka, Mariko*; Ito, Kazumasa*; Tsunogai, Urumu*; Suzuki, Yohei*; Mizuno, Takashi

no journal, ,

JAEA and AIST have been conducting collaborative work on hydrochemical study at MIU construction site. The aim of this collaborative study is to establish the methodology for investigation, analysis and evaluation of colloid/organics/microbes study. This paper reports the biogeochemical study. As the result, it is suggested that groundwater taken from deeper part (1150m depth) is relatively oxidized.

Investigation of tendency to long-term change in groundwater flow based on distribution of fluvial terrace

Nohara, Tsuyoshi; Tajikara, Masayoshi; Yasue, Kenichi; Kusano, Tomohiro

no journal, ,

This research aims at the reliability improvement of the investigation and the evaluation technique of the underground water flow related to long-term stability. The tendency to a long-term change in the underground water flow is presumed from the fluvial terrace distribution of the Tono area. It is recognized that underground water rise in the discharge area as a result of the analysis of the disequilibrium data during the past several thousand years.

Role of geochronology of seismic fault in geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste

Umeda, Koji

no journal, ,

The spent fuel from nuclear power generation is chemically processed at a fuel reprocessing plant for use as new fuel. After reprocessing spent fuel and recovery of the uranium and plutonium, the resultant high-level radioactive liquid waste is mixed with raw materials used to make glass. The vitrified waste is encapsulated in stainless steel containers and placed into temporary storage for 30 to 50 years to cool. It will subsequently be placed in a deep underground, geological disposal repository, at a depth of at least 300 m.

Oral presentation

Hydrogeological investigations in Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project; Observation results of the "Deformation induced effect" due to the shaft excavation in Granite area

Toya, Naruhisa; Takeuchi, Ryuji

no journal, ,

The NNW fault, cross the MIU construction site, was identified from the previous study. In 2008, a borehole was drilled from gallery at GL-300m of the shaft. Several monitoring boreholes are located in the vicinity of the inferred NNW trending fault. The data from groundwater pressure monitoring at multiple depth intervals during the drilling activities show unique responses which seems to the deformation-induced effects. We report the possible application of using these hydraulic responses for characterizing the hydrogeological structures of the site.

Hydrogeological invesitigation in Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project; Multiple lines of evidence for hydrogeological characterization in Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project

Takeuchi, Ryuji; Saegusa, Hiromitsu; Oyama, Takuya; Matsuoka, Toshiyuki; Takeuchi, Shinji

no journal, ,

The Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) is now under construction by Japan Atomic Energy Agency in the Cretaceous Toki granite in the Tono area of central Japan. The project is implemented in three overlapping phases: Surface-based Investigation (Phase I), Construction (Phase II) and Operation (Phase III), with a total duration of 20 years. Phase II of the MIU project is now carried out. The long-term monitoring, which are hydro-pressure, surface tilt and self-potential measurement, are carried out in/around the MIU construction site. This paper shows the possible application of using long-term monitoring data for characterizing the hydrogeological structures of the site.
